The Basics of Parsley

Parsley is described as a bright green biennial herb. It is commonly used in European, Middle Eastern, and American cooking. Its leaves are utilised in the same way as coriander or cilantro, although the former has a milder flavour.

It is composed of three main varieties. The Italian or flat leaf and the curly forms are used either as a garnish or for medicinal purposes. However, most people prefer using the kind that curls because it cannot be confused with poison hemlock. The third and the least common type is called the Hamburg. It is mostly used for its roots.

Parsley is native to Southern Europe in the Mediterranean region near Greece. It got its name from the Greek word petro which means stone, as this herb was first found on a rocky hillside. The Greeks originally used it for curing ailments and viewed it as a symbol of death. The Romans, on the other hand, believed that it could ward off drunkenness and remove bad breath.

Chervil is often used in soups, salads, and sauces to create a dish that hints of freshness. Leaves are generally added at the end of the cooking period to keep the flavour. The ones that are dried are tossed in before or during cooking to give their flavour the time to seep into the food.

When purchasing this ingredient, look for bright green hues and stay away from yellowing stems and leaves. You can store fresh produce by wrapping them in a damp paper towel before placing them inside a sealed container. Furthermore, keep dried parsley away from light and extreme temperatures to make it last longer.
